Starting her career at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Technical Community College as a facilities technician, Bernita Harris has embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. Through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to serving others, she has advanced into her current role as assistant to the dean of instruction, where she supports faculty, students, and academic Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ while continuing to make a positive impact across the College.
Q: Can you share your journey to becoming a staff member at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Tech? When did you start, and what were you doing before?
"I began my career at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Technical Community College as a facilities technician. I developed professionally and was given the opportunity to transition into the administrative assistant role for the English and Information Technology departments before advancing into my current role as assistant to the dean of instruction. Before Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Tech, I gained valuable experience through customer service roles. Those experiences taught me the importance of patience, teamwork, and providing excellent customer service."
Q: Describe your first day at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Tech. What was that experience like?
"My first day was exciting. There was a lot to take in, from learning about the buildings and meeting coworkers to understanding how the College operates. Everyone was welcoming and supportive."
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Tech?
"My favorite thing about working at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Tech is the opportunity for growth. I enjoy being part of an organization that encourages professional development and provides opportunities to grow. Every day brings new opportunities to learn, solve problems, and contribute to student success."
Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ Tech thus far?
"One of my favorite memories was being offered the opportunity to move into the assistant to the dean of instruction role. It was a proud moment because it represented both personal and professional growth. It reminded me that hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn can open doors to new opportunities."
Q: What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have you overcome them?
"Transitioning from Facilities to Instruction was one of the biggest challenges in my career. It meant learning new systems, understanding academic policies, managing faculty contracts and scheduling, and supporting multiple departments in a fast-paced environment. I overcame those challenges by asking questions, staying organized, and embracing every opportunity to learn. Each position has provided new opportunities to expand my knowledge and develop my skills."
Q: What are your interests or hobbies outside of the College?
"Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, and continuously learning new skills that help me grow both personally and professionally."
Q: What’s something people may not know about you?
"I enjoy finding solutions that make everyday tasks more efficient, both in my personal life and in the workplace."
